Music

I began composing music at a young age and have played a variety of different instruments throughout my life, though I actively focus on a few specific areas; throughout high school, I focused on drums & percussion in the jazz tradition–specifically jazz fusion and bop styles. As a classically trained vocalist, I sang in the Reed College Collegium (a small selective choir) throughout my college career.

I currently produce hip-hop and electronic music and occasionally DJ live events. My musical work can be found on my SoundCloud, Mixcloud, and on joelhawkins.info.

Below are select works that I believe best represent my current musical interests and influences.

Last Dance (Live Set)

This mix was recorded live in May of 2016 at the going-away party for one of my closest friends, Theo Sangenitto, who left Portland, OR to pursue an incredible career in electron microscopy. I was careful to engender feelings of mutual respect, appreciation, and equity–ideals which are often abused or mutated as partners expose more of themselves to another. Composed, mastered, and arranged in Ableton Continue reading Sleepover Mix

Lights Out Mix

Lights Out Mix

The “Lights Out” mix was created to commemorate the final concert organized by the student-run music booking group, clubbombshelter.tv. After organizing countless events over the years, this mix is particularly sentimental for all those involved. I remixed and mastered this mix using using Ableton Live. The tracks included in the mix were played on the Continue reading Lights Out Mix
